Waves of sadness can come over someone randomly, or when something depressing has occurred. When you find that someone is feeling sad you can try to talk to them to figure out what is making them so sad. Sometimes when talking about what is making you sad can help you start to feel better. But, if someone does not want to talk about what is making them sad, you can turn the conversation around to try and cheer them up. Say some jokes, tell them you’ll be there for them, and anything else that can make the person feel cared for.
You are not alone in this. I’m here for you
You may not believe it now, but the way you’re feeling will change
I may not be able to understand exactly how you feel, but I care about you and want to help
When you want to give up, tell yourself you will hold off for just one more day, hour, minute—whatever you can manage
I’m sad to hear you’re hurting
Have you told your doctor how you are feeling?
Do you need someone to talk with?
Your life makes a difference to me
You aren't weak or defective
This isn't an ending. You can beat this
I know you probably don’t feel like it right now but let’s go for a walk
Depression is a real thing
Explain it to me. I want to understand
There’s nothing you can say to me that will send me away from you
